Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: What was the medieval English lyric? Moving beyond the received understanding of the genre, The Voices of Medieval English Lyric explores, through analysis, discussion, and demonstration, what the term "lyric" most meaningfully implies in a Middle English context. A critical edition of 131 poems that illustrate the range and rich variety of lyric poetry from the mid-twelfth century to the early sixteenth century, The Voices of Medieval English Lyric presents its texts - freshly edited from the manuscripts - in thirteen sections emphasizing contrasting and complementary voices and genres. As well as a selection of religious poetry, the collection includes a high proportion of secular lyrics, many on love and sexuality, both earnest and humorous. In general, major authors who have been covered thoroughly elsewhere are excluded from the edited texts, but some, especially Chaucer, are quoted or mentioned as illuminating comparisons. Charles d'Orléans and the Scots poets Robert Henryson and William Dunbar add an extra-national dimension to a single-language collection. Textual and thematic notes are provided, as well as versions of the poems in Latin or French when these exist. Adopting new perspectives, The Voices of Medieval English Lyric offers an up-to-date, accessible, and distinctive take on Middle English poetry.

Book excerpt/Synopsis: John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Donald Davidson, and Robert Penn Warren—each began his career as one of the coterie of southern poets centered at Vanderbilt University who attracted national attention with their publication of The Fugitive magazine in the early 1920s and the celebrated essays in I’ll Take My Stand. Collectively known as the Fugitives (or Agrarians as they were later called) they became ardent and influential participants in the regionalist-proletarian literary controversies of the Depression decades. Each of the four poets was personally concerned with the connection between their creative work and the social realities around them. In The Wary Fugitives Louis Rubin masterfully explores and illustrates the relationships between their poetry, novels, and literary criticism, and their work as social critics. He conducts, in the process, a revealing and provocative inquiry into the connection between American history and the twentieth-century South.

This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: C. S. Lewis--On the Christ of a Religious Economy I, Creation and Sub-Creation opens with Lewis on creation, the fall into original sin, and the human condition before God and how such an understanding permeated all his work, post-conversion. For Lewis, Christ, the second person of the Trinity, is the agent of creation and its redeemer. This leads into Lewis's representation through sub-creation: explaining salvation history and the purpose of the creation and the creature through story (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Space Trilogy, Screwtape, etc.), but also the question of multiple incarnations, and the encounters he pens between Aslan-Christ and creatures. What does this tell us about the human predicament and our state after the fall? This volume forms the first part of the third book in a series of studies on the theology of C. S. Lewis titled C. S. Lewis: Revelation and the Christ. The books are written for academics and students, but also, crucially, for those people, ordinary Christians, without a theology degree who enjoy and gain sustenance from reading Lewis's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: The status of prisoners of war was firmly rooted in the practice of ransoming in the Middle Ages. By the opening stages of the Hundred Years War, ransoming had become widespread among the knightly community, and the crown had already begun to exercise tighter control over the practice of war. This led to tensions between public and private interests over ransoms and prisoners of war. Historians have long emphasised the significance of the French and English crowns' interference in the issue of prisoners of war, but this original and stimulating study questions whether they have been too influenced by the state-centred nature of most surviving sources. Based on extensive archival research, this book tests customs, laws and theory against the individual experiences of captors and prisoners during the Hundred Years War, to evoke their world in all its complexity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: This examination of Gentile and Jewish religious and literary descriptions of sacrificial and expulsion rituals provides a useful background to the study of Paul's metaphorical use of sacrifice and scapegoat to characterize the significance of the death of Jesus. In addition to offering an overview of Paul's use of cultic metaphors and an assessment of Paul's synthesis of martyrology and cultic metaphor, this work shows how Paul uses still other metaphors (acquittal, reconciliation, adoption) to picture the beneficial after-effects of that death. Download or Read book Jubilee Bible 2000: Dictionary & Concordance written by Russell M. Stendal and published by Ransom Press International. This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: The Jubilee Bible 2000: Concordance & Dictionary is a companion resource that will enhance the study of the Holy Scriptures by guiding the reader in finding the significance of important words, as well as the meanings of proper Greek and Hebrew names. While the reader will find this Concordance and Dictionary applicable to nearly any English version of the Bible, the Concordance is especially effective when studying the Jubilee Bible (JUB). This is because the Jubilee Bible stands apart from most other versions printed since the beginning of the last century. In the Jubilee Bible (JUB) the usage and context tends to define each key word so you don’t have to blindly rely on theological dictionaries or reference materials that may, wittingly or unwittingly, include any type of prejudice or bias. Careful attention has been made to properly and consistently translate each key word, through the first usage and on through to the last, avoiding the use of synonyms. Then, as a given word makes its way across the Old Testament and you make the correct match with the corresponding Greek word in the New Testament, an amazing pattern emerges. The Jubilee Bible is the only translation we know of that has made a serious attempt to mate each unique Hebrew word (and subsequently its Greek equivalent) with a unique English word (using the common English of William Tyndale and the extraordinary Hebrew scholarship of Casiodoro de Reina of the early Reformation), so that the usage (and number of occurrences of each key word) sets forth the idea of what God means by each word, as defined by the actual context in Scripture. We encourage the reader of the Jubilee Bible 2000: Concordance & Dictionary to check back from time-to-time, to look for updates to this volume, as we will continue to add to and/or correct this resource as clarity is given by the Holy Spirit.
