Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: From the deserts of Sudan to the jungles of Colombia, and from the streets of Belfast to the mountains of Kurdistan, paramilitaries have appeared in violent conflicts in very different settings. Paramilitaries are generally depicted as irregular armed organizations that carry out acts of violence against civilians on behalf of a state. In doing so, they undermine the state's monopoly of legitimate violence, while at the same time creating a breeding ground for criminal activities. Why do governments with functioning police forces and armies use paramilitary groups? This study tackles this question through the prism of the interpenetration of paramilitaries and the state. The author interprets paramilitarism as the ability of the state to successfully outsource mass political violence against civilians that transforms and traumatizes societies. It analyses how paramilitarism can be understood in global context, and how paramilitarism is connected to transformations of warfare and state-society relations. By comparing a broad range of cases, it looks at how paramilitarism has made a profound impact in a large number of countries that were different, but nevertheless shared a history of pro-government militia activity. A thorough understanding of paramilitarism can clarify the direction and intensity of violence in wartime and peacetime. The volume examines the issues of international involvement, institutional support, organized crime, party politics, and personal ties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: This book offers an in-depth overview of Turkish history and politics essential for understanding contemporary Turkey. It presents an analysis on a number of key issues from gender inequality to Islamism to urban regeneration. Based on interviews with leading intellectuals and academics from Turkey, the book’s theme follows the dramatic transformations that have occurred from the 1980 military coup to the coup attempt of 2016 and its aftermath. It further draws attention to the global flows of capital, goods, ideas, and technologies that continue to influence both mainstream and dissident politics. By doing so, the book tries to unsettle the assumption that Erdoğan and his Islamic ideology are the sole actors in contemporary Turkey. This book provides unusual insight into the Turkish society bringing various topics together, and increases the dialogue for people interested in democratic struggles in 21st century under neoliberal authoritarian regimes in general.

Summary Book and excerpt Globalizing the Peasant :

Download or Read book Globalizing the Peasant written by Virginia L. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: Globalizing the Peasant examines literary narratives from across the globe as an "affective archive" of crucial information regarding the human experience of globalization over the last 150 years. Her revealing lens is focused on agrarian populations whose deep emotional and spiritual attachment to the land has been irrevocably disrupted by the globalization processes of enclosure, commodification, and industrialization. In a wide-ranging corpus of texts from what Lewis terms "Global Land Literature, " she uncovers a well-spring of evidence concerning the harmful impact of globalization on human efforts to secure a happy existence and derive meaning and value from life. At the same time, she reveals that these very narratives are a crucial resource for ways to counteract the often destructive tendencies of global commercialization. Globalizing the Peasant thus underscores the abiding relevance of literature as an indispensable guide for ethical conduct in the new millennium.
