Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: As the United States becomes ever more comfortable with recognizing the cultural diversity of the many groups that make up its population, library services must seek to meet patrons' needs as they are shaped and expressed by their cultural backgrounds. This goal is particularly important for youth library services. For young people of Hispanic heritage, library services attuned to their specific needs and interests are crucial. Many librarians struggle with how to properly create and maintain library programs and collections that are suitable to the needs of Hispanic youth. In this series of essays prepared for the Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Library Education Fourth National Institute, national leaders in librarianship present their insights about how best to meet the needs of young Hispanic library patrons. The text is introduced by the editors, and the essays are arranged in parts: Programs; Collections; Planning and Evaluating; Bibliographical Resources; and For the Future. Information about the contributors and an index conclude the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: “Research Informing Practice—Practice Informing Research: Innovative Teaching Methodologies for World Language Educators” is an edited volume that focuses on innovative, nontraditional methods of teaching and learning world languages. Using teacher-research projects, each author in the volume guides readers through their own personal journey and exploration of teaching methods, novelty, risk-taking, and reflection. Chapters include guiding questions, vignettes, and thick descriptions of classroom-based research in an assortment of instructional settings. Theoretical issues and an array of practical applications are presented, as well as additional research opportunities and guidelines for implementation in a variety of teaching and learning venues. While not professing to be a panacea for world language learning, this book provides various lines of theory, research, and practice as they interact with each other through teacher-research narratives. As a well-known African proverb asserts, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Similarly, it takes a village to develop a master teacher, and it takes a community to create an exceptional classroom. Throughout this volume, authors share their voices, experiences, and expertise as a means of strengthening the village. They then invite readers to embark on their own methodological journeys. The text thus serves as a stimulus for further discussion and pedagogical development in world language settings. Teachers and researchers are challenged to think critically and reflectively about world language education, encouraged to design innovative methods, approaches, and techniques for their world language classes, and ultimately asked to share their findings with students, parents, peers, communities, and the village.

Download or Read book Lysosomal Storage Diseases written by Rossella Parini and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: The last fifteen years have witnessed the extraordinary evolution of basic and clinical research in the field of lysoso-mal storage diseases (LSDs), transforming many of them from dire, untreatable progressive diseases to conditions that allow for possible cure or mitigation. In addition to the presently employed techniques of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and enzyme replacement for a number of lysoso-mal storage diseases, other therapeutic approaches are being developed that are based on different principles. The awareness that the efficacy of treatment is greater if adminis-tered at the first signs of disease or, even better, during the pre-symptomatic phase underscores the urgency of early clinical diagnosis. Efforts are being made to improve the clinical acumen of paediatricians, paediatric surgeons and neurologists, rheumatologists, orthopaedists, and other professionals who come into early contact with children with LSDs. The possibility of including some of these disorders in routine neonatal screening is also a matter of discussion. This volume provides an updated overview of epidemiologic, biochemical, genetic, pathogenetic, and clinical aspects of these disorders and outlines the various treatment options currently available for the LSDs. The need for patients with rare diseases like LSDs to be followed-up in a specialised centre is emphasised in view of the many kinds of multidisciplinary treatment that are needed to improve the quality of life and survival of these children.
