Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: Seekers after wisdom have always been drawn to American Indian ritual and symbol. This history of two nineteenth-century Dreamer-Prophets, Smohalla and Skolaskin, will interest those who seek a better understanding of the traditional Native American commitment to Mother Earth, visionary experiences drawn from ceremony, and the promise of revitalization implicit in the Ghost Dance. To white observers, the Dreamers appeared to imitate Christianity by celebrating the sabbath and preaching a covenant with God, nonviolence, and life after death. But the Prophets also advocated adherence to traditional dress and subsistence patterns and to the spellbinding Washat dance. By engaging in this dance and by observing traditional life-ways, the Prophets claimed, the living Indians might bring their dead back to life and drive the whites from the earth. They themselves brought heaven to earth, they said, by “dying, going there, and returning,” in trances induced by the Washat drums. The Prophets’ sacred longhouses became rallying points for resistance to the United States government. As many as two thousand Indians along the Columbia River, from various tribes, followed the Dreamer religion. Although the Dreamers always opposed war, the active phase of the movement was brought to a close in 1889 when the United States Army incarcerated the younger Prophet Skolaskin at Alcatraz. Smohalla died of old age in 1894. Modern Dreamers of the Columbia plateau still celebrate the Feast of the New Foods in springtime as did their spiritual ancestors. This book contains rare modern photographs of their Washat dances. Readers of Indian history and religion will be fascinated by the descriptions of the Dreamer-Prophets’ unique personalities and their adjustments to physical handicaps. Neglected by scholars, their role in the important pan-Indian revitalization movement has awaited the detailed treatment given here by Robert H. Ruby and John A. Brown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: Dreams in Early Modern England offers an in-depth exploration of the variety of different ways in which early modern people understood and interpreted dreams, from medical explanations to political, religious or supernatural associations. Through examining how dreams were discussed and presented in a range of diffrerent texts, including both published works and private notes and diaries, this book highlights the many coexisting strands of thought that surrounded dreams in early modern England. Most significantly, it places early modern perceptions of dreams within the social context of the period through an evaluation of how they were shaped by key events of the time, such as the Reformation and the English Civil Wars. The chapters also explore contemporary experiences and ideas of dreams in relation to dream divination, religious visions, sleep, nightmares and sleep disorders. This book will be of great value to students and academics with an interest in dreams and the understanding of dreams, sleep and nightmares in early modern English society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: In Who Is the Dreamer Who Dreams the Dream? A Study of Psychic Presences, James Grotstein integrates some of his most important work of recent years in addressing fundamental questions of human psychology and spirituality. He explores two quintessential and interrelated psychoanalytic problems: the nature of the unconscious mind and the meaning and inner structure of human subjectivity. To this end, he teases apart the complex, tangled threads that constitute self-experience, delineating psychic presences and mystifying dualities, subjects with varying perspectives and functions, and objects with different, often phantasmagoric properties. Whether he is expounding on the Unconscious as a range of dimensions understandable in terms of nonlinear concepts of chaos, complexity, and emergence theory; modifying the psychoanalytic concept of psychic determinism by joining it to the concept of autochthony; comparing Melanie Klein's notion of the archaic Oedipus complex with the ancient Greek myth of the labyrinth and the Minotaur; or examining the relationship between the stories of Oedipus and Christ, Grotstein emerges as an analyst whose clinical sensibility has been profoundly deepened by his scholarly use of mythology, classical thought, and contemporary philosophy. The result is both an important synthesis of major currents of contemporary psychoanalytic thought and a moving exploration of the nature of human suffering and spirituality.

Book excerpt/Synopsis: Dream-On is a mandate, God breathed word to young and old, male and female – to dream, to be visionary, but most importantly to connect.Imagine a world in sync with the prophetic flowing, the dreamers dreaming and the visionaries casting to light the impossible. God solutions for life and future and purpose. That world is here in the now, challenging our generations of dreamers and visionaries to be dynamic, to manifest the spirit of excellence and to be the best that God wants us to be. Dream On is a vision, a revelation that explores God’s end time call to dreamers and visionaries; you and I, to start dreaming the God dreams and nurturing the next generation to be effective in their roles as visionaries. This book explores the life of Joseph who dared to dream and relentlessly pursued his dream that took him from the pits of slavery, to the house of Potiphar then to the prison dungeons and eventually to the house of Pharaoh and the most important throne in the land; besides Pharaoh’s at least. Despite the betrayal at the hands of his own brothers, Joseph reminded them that God had planned his life for the good for the saving of many lives. Your dreams or visions are meant to influence people around you. In fact, as dreamers and visionaries connect and work their dreams and vision, they will usher in a revival. The winds of revival are blowing across the world and dreamers and visionaries are taking their place in the end-time church, to be vessels that the Lord will use for His greater purposes. This revival will be unlike any other. It will come through visionaries and dreamers connecting with the Holy Spirit and with each other and equipped and used by God to manifest His presence to the world. This end-time revival will not just be in the church, but also in the workplaces, the streets, the communities and even in the most unlikely of places. This Holy Spirit move will bring about new-found boldness amongst believers as they declare the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
