Download or Read book Flames After Midnight written by Monte Akers and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/Synopsis: What happened in Kirven, Texas, in May 1922, has been forgotten by the outside world. It was a coworker's whispered words, "Kirven is where they burned the [Negroes]," that set Monte Akers to work at discovering the true story behind a young white woman's brutal murder and the burning alive of three black men who were almost certainly innocent of it. This was followed by a month-long reign of terror as white men killed blacks while local authorities concealed the real identity of the white probable murderers and allowed them to go free. Writing nonfiction with the skill of a novelist, Akers paints a vivid portrait of a community desolated by race hatred and its own refusal to face hard truths. He sets this tragedy within the story of a region prospering from an oil boom but plagued by lawlessness, and traces the lynching's repercussions down the decades to the present day. In the new epilogue, Akers adds details that have come to light as a result of the book's publication, including an eyewitness account of the burnings from an elderly man who claimed to have castrated two of the men before they were lynched.

Book excerpt/Synopsis: If you are looking for a normal book that contains a normal story, where normal characters solve a normal conflict, which will all end in a satisfying, and happy ending. Then DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. This book is abnormal, with abnormal characters, and an abnormal conflict whose ending will only lead to the beginning of something greater. Eve Edwards is a 16 year old girl who moves to a town not on any maps named Hollow, with her oblivious parents and little brother. Upon her first day she receives a journal from a sentient tree. The journal gets uploaded into her mind giving her access to its information. The town Hollow is full of every monster you can think of whose lives are as mundane as ours. While Eve is at her new school she befriends a talking monkey named Simian, a ghost named Conar, half-siren girl named Sari Okamoto, a half-mummy girl named Ryan Essam, a skittish girl named Aria Sanchez, a Vampire named Julian Carter, and two fourth-wall breaking, mischievous Gremlin twins named Measle and Mumps. Together, they will recreate the lodge of Mystery; a group whose original members all died or vanished. They will also travel down the dark road of a man also named Hollow whose origins may be from an alternate universe that was desolated by an evil that Eve will take on the responsibility to defeat. Truth be told, within in the chapters of this tome, Eve will face bizarre lockers, strange teachers, weird bus drivers, unusual trees, warped mayors, curious crows, and a journal written for her thirty years before she was even born. It is my peculiar duty to record and tell forgotten and unknown stories. And to do this I must travel down the dark, twisted road that is Hollow (the man not the town). And if I fail, I pray that you will finish my mission. But if you prefer not to read a book which contains twin gremlins, kind ghosts, vulgar dummies, snakes that serve food, and talking monkeys, I completely understand. But if you do; then you will surely enjoy the tale of Hollow's Eve and the Anomalous Lodge of Mystery.

Book excerpt/Synopsis: **WINNER OF THE 2020 WALES BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD** 'A magnificently gifted writer' Irvine Welsh A Welsh community witnesses a strange vision: the huge spectre of a woman floating over a ridge. Is it a collective hallucination, a meteorological phenomenon, or something supernatural? The individuals living in these mountains are already battling their own demons - of drink, drugs, domestic violence, depression - how could an apparition unite these crushed people or their fragmented country? This is a novel that gives voices to the marginalised, the dispossessed, the forgotten. An examination of modern humanity's desperate need to live meaningfully and vividly in a mediated world - where individual autonomy is lost and the collective heart is atomised and exploited. Disturbing and unforgettable, darkly funny and deeply moving, it is written in a charged language that is vernacular, lyrical and hieratic all at once. Broken Ghost is a howl of anguish and a summoning of gods. 'Combines myth, drug culture and iconoclastic political vision in a wild music that's also a call to arms' New Statesman, Books of the Year 'Griffiths has forged a chimerical piece of radical fiction, a Blake-like reverie on the possibility (or not) of spiritual regeneration in our time.' Guardian 'This is a book powered along with ferocious momentum by the raw nervous energy of its characters, whose demotic, alternating narratives seem to muscle bodily off the page.' Daily Mail
